What Am I Working On?
Gearing up for the fall semester, wherein I am teaching five writing classes (3 Composition II, Digital Narratives, & Creative Writing). Trying to wrestle the Canvas LMS to my will. Still consulting and reading (or re-reading in some cases) a slew of craft books for a now-confirmed conference presentation on creative process & practice:
- The Craft edited by Rishi Dastidar
- Craft in the Real World by Matthew Salesses
- The Creative Act: A Way of Being by Rick Rubin
- How to Write One Song: Loving the Things We Create and How They Love Us Back by Jeff Tweedy
- How We Do It edited by Jericho Brown
- Syllabus by Lynda Barry
- three six five: prompts, acts, divinations by Lucy Ives
- The Writer's Notebook: Craft Essays from Tin House
- The Writer's Notebook II: Craft Essays from Tin House
- The first three books in what I consider the Austin Kleon Holy Tetralogy: Steal Like an Artist, Show Your Work, and Keep Going. I'm waiting for his latest, Don't Call It Art, to be released in paperback.
Books I'm Reading for Fun (in various states of progress)
- Broken: Six Novellas by Don Winslow
- Rally Round the Flag, Boys! by Max Shulman
- City of Dreams by Don Winslow
- Sex of the Midwest by Robyn Ryle
- Profit and Punishment: How America Criminalizes the Poor in the Name of Justice by Tony Messenger
- Hard Case Crime series by various authors
What I Recommend
- IKEA VAGGSÅNG Lingonberry spread. It's fantastic on sourdough toast.
- Bourbon, whisky, & whiskey. Cheap is good, but don't punish your gut.
- Getting up close & cozy with a really good book.
- Store brand Nutty Buddy bars.
- Putting away your damn phone while doing your business in public bathrooms.
- Analog watches. I like Casio & Timex brands under $80. Yeah, I'm cheap.
- Writing in pocket notebooks. I like these and these, but any will do.
- Parker Jotter pens, but not the factory refills. I like these instead.
